Tips for Cockroach Pest Control in your Home

Cockroach Basic Facts

German Cockroaches are the most common roach that The X-Terminators see in Vancouver and surrounding cities. These cockroaches are smaller than your typical cockroach, clocking in at about a 1/2 inch to 5/8’s of an inch long. They are tan in colour and can be easily identified by the two black lines on their head. While they do have wings, they rarely use them. Just one egg sac can contain between 30-40 eggs! These cockroaches are known for their ability to infest structures due to their quick reproduction cycle, with a preference for areas like your kitchen & bathrooms. They often nest in fridges or stoves for a source of warmth or in behind cupboards and other appliances to stay safe.

American Cockroaches are a much less common roach, however we have seen infestations of these type of cockroach in The Greater Vancouver Area. They are a reddish brown and are on average about 1.6 inches long, however, we’ve seen bigger! Despite their large size, they are very quick in order to dodge dangers they are presented with. Unlike German cockroaches which can fully mature in ideal conditions in just over one month, American cockroaches can take 6-12 months to fully develop.

It is common to see cockroaches at night when they are most active, but that doesn’t mean we don’t see them during the day too! A daytime roach sighting can be an indicator that the infestation is more advanced.

How can you be proactive against a cockroach infestation?

Place and check glue board monitors regularly so that you are able to catch an issue early on.

Keep your home clean and tidy. Doing this helps you to avoid providing an easy food source to potential pests.

De-clutter as much as possible to eliminate hiding spots.

Take garbage and recycling out regularly. Don’t forget to clean the bins!

If you notice a leak, fix it right away. Cockroaches thrive in humid/moist environments

What if Cockroaches are already in your home?

Use glue boards to catch and kill cockroaches as they wander your home.

Deep clean your home. Think under the stove and fridge, inside cupboards.

Make sure your food is stored in airtight containers. This prevents your food from becoming contaminated by the bacteria cockroaches carry on their bodies, and it also eliminates additional food sources.

Make sure to clean your kitchen nightly so that no food waste is left out! Also empty your garbage and recycling nightly, and wipe up water spills.
